In the middle of the holiday season, 650 people will be out of work. This will be the second round of layoffs in only a year for the Volvo Trucks North America plant in Dublin. You may remember back in February when the company laid off about 900 people.
All but 48 of those had since returned to work, now many of the same people are likely to be laid off again. A Volvo spokesperson says the demand just isn’t there right now, and as a result employment must be cut.
Lester Hancock, UAW Local 2069 - “Most of them will probably look for other jobs. There’d be some who will probably have to draw unemployment because we don’t have that many jobs in this area!”
Ninety-nine-percent of the Volvo workers are represented by Local 2069. The union will begin contract negotiations in January in hopes of getting all 650 people back to work.
